Depth Perception is a video-art & auditory collaborative installation that speaks to the concepts of duality and dichotomy. By reflecting on how the human experience can be so entirely altered by perspective, “Depth Perception” aims to immerse a singular audience participant into a self-reflective journey of how one’s personal experience can be interpreted and potentially reframed by environmental influences. Tackling themes of mental health, disconnection, cognitive dissonance and displacement, the installation embodies sensations of overwhelm. Two separate scored soundscapes play over top of two mirrored moving image displays to address parallels in contrasting concepts such as connection & disconnection / calm & chaos, that are inherently shaped by individual interpretation. The installation reveals that any singular experience can evoke contrasting emotions. On one hand, tranquillity and sentimental recollection can coexist with disquiet and alienation. A subtle transformation or shift in soundscape has the power to thrust the observer into a state of tension and unease or alternatively into serene reverie. “Depth Perception” places the viewer out of one’s element, pushed below the surface where it can’t come up for air. Speaking to the theme of ‘relocation’ the piece uses sound and vision to challenge the perception of idyllic with unexpected moments of disorientation and discomfort.
